It is with great sadness that we announce that the prince has passed away suddenly tonight
A prominent figure known for his contributions to literature and history has passed away at the age of 85 in Athens, Greece. As a member of the Greek royal family, he was the last surviving grandson of George I and had connections to the House of Bourbon through his mother.
He gained public attention in 1965 when he married Marina Karella, a union that required him to renounce his right to the Greek throne. The couple had two daughters, Princess Olga of Savoy-Aosta and Princess Alexandra of Greece.
Born to Prince Christopher and Princess Francoise, he faced early challenges with the death of his father in 1940 and his mother in 1953, leaving him an orphan at 14. Despite these adversities, he pursued education in political science in Paris before fulfilling his military service with the Hellenic Coast Guard, which allowed him to regain his Greek citizenship.
Throughout his life, he remained dedicated to his country and heritage. He was the only member of the Greek royal family to stay in Greece during the political upheaval of 1967, a turbulent period marked by a right-wing military coup following King Constantine’s unsuccessful attempt to overthrow the junta.
His literary and historical works further solidified his legacy, showcasing his passion for his family’s history and the broader historical narrative of Greece. His death marks the end of an era for the Greek royal family, closing a significant chapter in their history.
